Bone Grafting & PRF Protocols
Complete step-by-step protocols for socket preservation, ridge augmentation, and sinus lifts — all enhanced with Platelet-Rich Fibrin (PRF) for superior clinical outcomes. Includes CDT codes, materials, and evidence-based guidelines.
Why PRF in Every Grafting Protocol?
Platelet-Rich Fibrin (PRF) is a second-generation platelet concentrate prepared from the patient's own blood — no additives, no bovine thrombin, 100% autologous. PRF releases growth factors (PDGF, TGF-β, VEGF, BMP-2) over 10-14 days, dramatically enhancing bone and soft tissue healing.

Understanding Bone Grafting — A Simple Guide
Tooth Removed
When a tooth is removed, the bone that held it begins to shrink — like a muscle that isn't used anymore.
Bone Graft Placed
We place a safe, natural bone material into the empty socket. Think of it as 'fertilizer' that helps your body grow new, strong bone.
PRF Healing Boost
We use a small sample of your own blood to create a healing concentrate (PRF). It's like a vitamin boost that speeds up your body's natural healing.
New Bone Grows
Over 4-6 months, your body replaces the graft with your own strong, healthy bone — ready for a dental implant.
Types of Bone Grafting We Offer
Socket Preservation
Right after a tooth is removed
We fill the empty socket with bone material and PRF to prevent the bone from shrinking. This keeps the area strong for a future implant.
Ridge Augmentation
When the jawbone is too narrow
We build up the width of your jawbone using bone graft material, PRF, and a protective membrane. This creates enough bone for a stable implant.
Sinus Lift
When upper back teeth need implants
The sinus cavity sits above your upper back teeth. We gently lift the sinus floor and add bone material underneath to create enough depth for implants.
What is PRF? (Your Body's Own Healing Power)
PRF stands for Platelet-Rich Fibrin. It's a 100% natural healing concentrate made from a small sample of your own blood — no chemicals, no additives, nothing artificial.
Think of it this way: when you get a cut, your blood naturally forms a clot to heal the wound. PRF concentrates those same healing cells and growth factors into a powerful membrane that we place directly where you need it most.
Because it comes from your own body, there is virtually zero risk of allergic reaction or rejection. It's one of the safest and most effective healing tools in modern dentistry.
How PRF Works — Step by Step
We draw a small blood sample (like a routine blood test)
The blood is spun in a special centrifuge for 12 minutes
This separates the healing cells and growth factors
We create a golden membrane rich in healing power
The PRF is placed directly at your surgical site
Your body heals faster with less pain and swelling
Frequently Asked Questions
Does bone grafting hurt?
Most patients are surprised at how comfortable the procedure is. We use local anesthesia during the procedure, and many patients also benefit from Exparel (a 72-hour numbing agent). After the procedure, alternating 600mg ibuprofen and 1,000mg acetaminophen every 3 hours keeps most patients very comfortable. Many patients return to work the next day.
Where does the bone graft material come from?
We use safe, FDA-approved bone graft materials. The most common options are processed human donor bone (allograft) and bovine bone mineral (xenograft). Both serve as a scaffold that your body gradually replaces with your own natural bone. We also use PRF from your own blood to supercharge the healing process.
Is PRF safe? What if I'm afraid of needles?
PRF is one of the safest procedures in dentistry because it uses your own blood — nothing foreign is added. The blood draw is just like a routine blood test at your doctor's office. Most patients say it's the easiest part of the whole visit. The benefits are enormous: faster healing, less pain, less swelling, and better bone quality.
How long until I can get my dental implant?
Healing time depends on the type of graft. Socket preservation typically takes 4-6 months. Ridge augmentation and sinus lifts take 6-9 months. We monitor your healing with periodic X-rays and will let you know exactly when your bone is ready for the implant. The wait is worth it — strong bone means a strong, long-lasting implant.
What can I eat after bone grafting?
For the first 48 hours, stick to soft, cool foods: smoothies, yogurt, mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, and protein shakes. Avoid hot foods, spicy foods, crunchy foods, and anything with small seeds. After 48 hours, you can gradually return to softer regular foods. Avoid chewing directly on the surgical site for 2 weeks.
What if I don't get a bone graft after my tooth is removed?
Without a bone graft, the jawbone in that area will shrink significantly — losing up to 50% of its width in the first year. This bone loss can make future implant placement difficult or impossible without more extensive (and expensive) surgery later. Socket preservation at the time of extraction is the most cost-effective approach.
How much does bone grafting cost?
Costs vary by procedure type. Socket preservation typically ranges from $450-$800. Ridge augmentation ranges from $1,500-$3,000. Sinus lifts range from $1,500-$3,000 per side. Many dental insurance plans cover a portion of bone grafting when it's medically necessary. Our team will provide a detailed estimate and help you understand your insurance benefits before treatment.
Can bone grafting fail?
Bone grafting has a very high success rate (over 95%). The most important factors for success are: following post-operative instructions carefully, not smoking (smoking dramatically reduces success), taking prescribed medications, and keeping follow-up appointments. PRF further improves success rates by accelerating healing and reducing complications.
Bone grafting and PRF protocols are for educational reference. Always follow manufacturer instructions and current evidence-based guidelines.
PRF centrifuge settings may vary by manufacturer — verify with your specific device documentation.
