Complication Resolution Protocols

Inflammatory condition affecting the tissues around a dental implant, characterized by loss of supporting bone. This is the implant equivalent of periodontitis and the leading biological cause of implant failure.

Prevalence: 12-22% of implant patients

Loosening of the abutment screw or prosthetic retaining screw. This is the most common mechanical complication and can lead to component fracture if not addressed promptly.

Prevalence: 5-12% within 5 years

Normal wear of the nylon retention inserts in LOCATOR attachments. This is an expected maintenance item, not a complication per se, but patients often present with complaints of loose dentures when inserts need replacement.

Prevalence: Expected every 6-12 months

Fracture of the acrylic denture base, teeth, or framework of an implant-retained prosthesis. More common in overdentures without a metal framework and in patients with bruxism.

Prevalence: 8-15% within 5 years

Reversible inflammation of the soft tissue around an implant WITHOUT bone loss. This is the precursor to peri-implantitis and represents the critical window for intervention.

Prevalence: 30-50% of implant patients

Damage to the inferior alveolar nerve or mental nerve during implant placement, resulting in altered sensation (paresthesia) or pain (dysesthesia) in the lower lip, chin, and/or gingiva.

Prevalence: 0.5-5% of mandibular implants

Failure of the implant to osseointegrate during the healing period, resulting in implant mobility and the need for removal. Early failure occurs before prosthetic loading.

Prevalence: 2-5% of implants placed

Loss of cement seal between the implant abutment and the cemented crown, causing the crown to loosen or fall off. More common with short abutments and smooth surfaces.

Prevalence: 5-8% within 5 years
